A Slow Website Drives Prospects Away: Common Causes and How to Fix Them

Picture a prospect finding your business on Google and opening your website on their phone while waiting for a coffee. The page doesn't show up, the screen stays white, and within seconds they tap back and open a competitor's site. The opportunity is gone before they have read anything about you.

Website speed isn't just a technical detail. A fast website feels more professional, is more comfortable to read, and suggests the business behind it is well run. Search engines like Google also take user experience, including speed, into account when evaluating a page.

Here are the most common reasons a website is slow, and how to fix them.

1. Oversized images. This is the most frequent culprit. A photo straight from a camera or phone can be several megabytes even though it is shown small on screen. Resize images to the size they are displayed at, compress them, and use a modern format such as WebP where possible.

2. Too many plugins, scripts, and widgets. Every slider, pop-up, chat box, or tracker loads extra files. Review which ones are actually used and remove the ones that add no value.

3. Unsuitable hosting. The cheapest hosting plans are often shared with a very large number of other websites. If most of your visitors are in Indonesia, choose a provider with nearby servers and enough resources for your traffic.

4. No caching. Without a cache, the server rebuilds the page for every visitor. Turning on page caching and browser caching makes repeat visits much lighter.

5. Videos and maps embedded directly. A YouTube video or map that loads in full from the start is heavy. Lazy loading makes this heavy content load only when a visitor scrolls to it or clicks it.

6. Unmaintained code and themes. Old themes, piled-up code, and outdated PHP versions can slow a site down and open security holes. Regular updates keep the website fast and safe.

To check your speed, you can use free tools such as Google PageSpeed Insights. Enter your website address and pay attention to the mobile results, since that is usually where most visitors come from.

Don't obsess over a perfect score. What matters most is that the main page opens quickly, the text is readable right away, and key buttons such as WhatsApp or the contact form are easy to find.
